Madrid
Madrid is a cosmopolitan city with many theatres, cinemas,
operas and more than 50 museums and art galleries. It
is worth the trouble to visit the Royal Palace and to
take a walk by the Puerta del Sol (where is kilometre
0, the point from where all the distances of Spain are
calculated) and by the Plaza Mayor with its stores, bars
and inns.
The more important green space of Madrid is the Retiro
Park, an old place of rest of the Spanish kings. Among
its attractions are a lake with boats, the Botanical Garden
and the summer festivals. To the west of the city downtown
is Casa de Campo, an enormous green space with swimming
pools, tennis courts, jogging paths and a zoo with aquarium,
neighbouring the Amusement park.
To the Southeast of the city is the Biological Park, a
new thematic park dedicated to the biodiversity, where
great amount of pavilions can be found with different
ecosystems recreated. To 40 km to the north of Madrid
is El Escorial, where can be visited the monumental Monastery
of San Lorenzo del Escorial, that includes a Church, a
Royal Palace, a monastery and a famous bookstore. It is
near the Mountain range of Guadarrama, where it’s
possible to practice ski in winter. Other recommended
excursions are Alcala de Henares, famous by their University
and as home town of Miguel de Cervantes (the author of
the Quixote) and Catherine de Aragón; and Aranjuez,
with its precious Summer Palace known as Casita del Labrador.
