Prado
Museum
Without any doubt, one of the greatest picture galleries
of the world and at the moment of its opening in 1819,
one of the first public art museums. The building, constructed
in the decade of 1780-90, was devised by the neo-classic
architect Juan de Villanueva to become Museum of Natural
Sciences. The idea to destine it as an Art Museum came
from Jose Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, that was crowned
Jose I of Spain during the French occupation.
The Prado Museum has more than 9,000 works in its funds,
paintings to a large extent, of which only 1,500 are exposed
the public. Are representations and examples of the Flemish
and 16th century Italian schools, as examples of baroque
and modern Spanish paintings, while the protestant schools
(English, Dutch) absolutely lack space in her. Some of
the artists who are here are Brueghel, Van Dyck, El Bosco,
Durero, Rembrandt, Rubens, Botticelli, Bronzino, Raphael,
Tiziano, Tintoretto, El Greco, Velázquez, Murillo,
Ribera and Goya.
