Picasso
Museum
The greater monographic museum of the world with an important
work collection of the great painter. The general structure
of the building dates from the 15th century, although
it has architectonic characteristics of several periods.
The original collection consists of 422 works, to which
were added the exposed in the Museum of Modern Art. Later
additions include some particular donations and new works
presented by Picasso to Sabartés, since even after
the death of his friend, the artist continued separating
for him a copy of each one of his engravings and these
works then were added to the collection of the Museum
automatically.
In 1970, Picasso made an important donation to the collection:
the fifty-eight oils that form their series of variations
on the subject of the Velázquez’ Meninas.
The total group is an exhaustive study of colour, composition,
rhythm and movement, in a synthesis of the styles of Picasso
since the cubism. The ceramics section have a total of
41 pieces, donated by Jacqueline Picasso in 1982 and created
in the period from 1947 to 1965. With them, Picasso introduced
innovations of technical level as of imagination in the
this complex world, the oldest of the plastic arts.
