The mountains,
the plains and the Spanish central plateau are ideal to
go on trip, to practice scaling or simply cross them.
Particularly advisable for the hikers are the Pyrenees,
in the north of the country: an impressive landscape of
rocky walls, lakes and precipices. The Peaks of Europe
to the west of Santander are also a wild and dramatic
landscape, with some peaks rising above the 2600 meters,
reason why there are good opportunities for the mountaineers.
The long Spanish horse riding tradition make it easy to
arrange rides.
Swimming, aquatic ski and windsurf can be practiced in
almost all beaches. The best place to practice windsurf
is Tariff, in Gibraltar, with world-wide championships.
Sailing is also very popular; there are almost a hundred
sailing clubs, the majority near the Mediterranean. The
Pyrennes and Peaks of Europe rivers offers good fishing
points, whereas the trout is abundant all over the country.
Golf is getting more and more popular. Spain at the moment
has almost 200 clubs of golf, including those designed
according to the tastes of golfers as Roberto Trent Jones,
Severiano Ballesteros, Gato Niklaus and Jose Maria Olazabel.
The warm weather of Spain allows a long golfing season.
Spain offers very good winter sports centres, equipped
with the last technology. Among the main centres are those
in the Pyrenees, Cantabria and the Catalans.
When it comes to spectator sports, a typical one is Basque
ball or jai-alai. The more important cities of north Spanish
have play fields with the season running between October
and June. Soccer is another popular sport, in fact one
of the most popular sports of Spain, with the Real Madrid
and Barcelona among the most famous and followed teams.
